Monologue Slam finalist & new representation!

For years, I’d heard about the Canada Monologue Slam and thought, “Me, enter? No way. I couldn’t do that.” And that was because I struggled to identify as a “real actor” - one competent enough to perform in such a showcase among my peers that I thought were so much more talented than me. But it was this kind of mindset that has held me back for far too long.

Cut to all of us suddenly finding ourselves in the middle of a pandemic. It’s May 2020 and we’re all confined to our homes and desperate for any outlet we can find to perform and create. As I was flipping through my Instagram Stories feed, I saw my dear friend Sam had just taped her entry into the online version of the Monologue Slam and was immediately intrigued. I had committed to 2020 being a year of “Action” (I choose a word, a mantra, to live by every year). Perhaps, it was time to shed my fears, pull up my bootstraps, and just do the thing.

I love that you can choose any piece to perform for the Slam. I scoured a number of my favourite shows looking for a scene that I could have a lot of fun with and that fit my brand, and landed on a hilarious moment from The Mindy Project. I’ve always felt deeply connected to this show and Mindy Kaling’s character. Plus, I really wanted to choose a piece that was written by a woman. This scene was perfect.

I’m so glad I took the plunge. I’m happy to announce that I placed as a finalist with this entry. Plus? Entering into the Slam led me to the introduction to my new agent, who’s not only awesome and founded the Monologue Slam, but is also someone I’m so super excited to work with in my career. Thank you, Andre and Shortlist Artists. Here’s to a wonderful partnership together!
